The Fox & Hounds

Tucked away along Markham Road in Wroughton, Swindon, The Fox & Hounds is that kind of local gem you stumble upon once-and then keep coming back to. From the moment you arrive, there’s an undeniable charm that greets you. Maybe it’s the classic British pub exterior with its warm wood tones, or maybe it’s the cozy, kid-friendly atmosphere that instantly feels familiar. Either way, this isn’t just a place to eat-it’s a place to settle in, unwind, and let time slow down for a bit.

Let’s start with what makes The Fox & Hounds special. For one, the free parking is a win, especially in a village setting where finding a spot can often be a mini battle. Whether you're a local or just passing through Swindon, not having to worry about where to park is a small but meaningful touch. Another practical perk? Free Wi-Fi. Yep, even in this rustic, classic-feeling pub, you can still post your Sunday roast on Instagram in real time.

Speaking of roasts-yes, Sunday roast here is a crowd-pleaser. Think perfectly golden Yorkshire puddings, rich gravy, and meat that’s cooked just right. But don’t stop there. Their menu offers a variety of British pub favorites that balance comfort with quality. You’ll find hearty pies, crisp fish and chips, and surprisingly well-seasoned vegetarian options too. It’s not one of those overly trendy menus trying too hard. Instead, it’s the kind of food that knows what it is-simple, honest, and satisfying.

The bar? It doesn’t disappoint. You’ll find a solid selection of beers, both local and popular, alongside classic wines and spirits. It’s the sort of bar where the bartender might remember your order by your third visit, which adds to the neighborhood-pub vibe. And no, there’s no fitness center or pool here-but let’s be honest, that’s not what you come to a place like this for.

What really brings The Fox & Hounds to life is its laid-back, smoke-free environment, perfect for families and small groups who just want to relax. It’s not pet-friendly, so furry friends have to sit this one out, but on the flip side, it helps maintain a cleaner, calmer dining atmosphere. And if you’ve got little ones in tow, the kid-friendly setting-including friendly staff and menu options that appeal to younger palates-makes for an easygoing outing.

While there's no air conditioning, the thick old walls and open layout of the building keep things surprisingly temperate-even on warmer days. And in cooler months, the snug interiors and wood accents give off just the right amount of comfort. There’s no airport shuttle, no trendy lounge music, and no fancy gimmicks-just genuine hospitality in a place that feels like a second home.

If you're comparing venues in Swindon or looking for alternatives to big-chain dining, The Fox & Hounds sets itself apart by doing the basics exceptionally well. It doesn’t try to be everything for everyone-but what it offers, it nails: a welcoming pub experience with good food, good drinks, and good people.

In a world of overhyped restaurants with overcomplicated menus, there’s something refreshing about a spot that sticks to what it knows. The Fox & Hounds isn’t just about meals-it’s about moments. Whether you're catching up with friends, bringing the family out for a casual lunch, or just stopping by for a pint after work, this is the kind of place that delivers every time.

We will be back! The two of us went for the Sunday Dinner and it was great! The meats were tender and plenty of Veg on the side. We got a warm welcome on arrival, and the relaxed atmosphere went a long way after my long day at work. The drinks offering is very good too. Service was 10/10. We will no doubt be returning.

Had a lovely meal here on our way back to Wantage from Butterfly World today. 3 adults and 1 4 year old. Really lovely atmosphere and great service, food, and company all at a great price. The pub was packed and it was a Tueaday lunchtime so that tells you it's good!
